What is Payment Depot?

Payment Depot is a provider of payment gateways and processor of credit cards. It holds headquarters in Orange, California. Payment Depot was established in 2013. Payment Depot is known for being a pioneer in the area of membership pricing or subscription pricing.

Payment Depot came up with membership pricing to provide merchants with a way of saving money on the overall costs of payment processing. Membership subscription also helps reduce the number of fees that merchants need to pay for payment processing.

Payment Depot uses a business model and pricing structure that’s similar to that of Costco’s. Payment Depot is often referred to as Costco of payment gateways. The company claims that it processes around $4 billion worth of payments per year.

Payment Depot is suitable for a wide variety of merchants. Merchants that use Payment Depot include restaurants, retail shops, B2B, and e-commerce sites. Payment Depot is also available to those who offer professional services like medical, accounting, and legal services.

How Does Payment Depot Work?

Unlike other payment processors, there are no additional charges on top of interchange fees when using Payment Depot. Payment Depot uses a cost-plus pricing model. The company uses this along with a flat monthly fee in order to keep the costs of transactions low. This business model is suitable for businesses or merchants that handle large transaction amounts.

Merchants can use Payment Depot to accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express credit cards. Payment Depot also accepts Google Pay and Apple Pay.

Payment Depot Plans

Merchants can choose between four Payment Depot plans, with a choice between monthly and annual memberships. Payment Depot does not charge cancellation fees.

Payment Depot’s Basic Plan is ideal for small businesses that handle up to $25,000 of payments per month. The membership plan is worth $49 per month. There is also a fee of 15 cents per transaction.

Payment Depot’s Most Popular Membership costs $79 per month, with a charge of 10 cents per transaction. This plan is ideal for merchants that process up to $75,000 per month. The subscription comes with a free basic terminal.

For merchants that handle up to $150,000 per month, Payment Depot has a Premier Plan. The charge is $99 per month and an additional seven cents per transaction. The plan also includes a free smart terminal or premium gateway. Merchants also get free breach protection.

Payment Depot’s Unlimited Plan is a good option for merchants that process an unlimited number of transactions each month. The Premier Plan costs $199 per month and an additional five cents per transaction.

The Unlimited Plan includes a free Clover Mini and premium gateway. Premium Plan Subscribers are also entitled to a dedicated account manager and breach protection.

Payment Depot also offers customized plans for merchants that have special payment processing needs.

Payment Depot Mobile

For mobile processing, Payment Depot has SwipeSimple. Payment Depot’s mobile application is capable of handling sales tax and discounts. Merchants can also use a virtual desktop terminal. The virtual terminal allows merchants to save credit card numbers, issue email invoices, or set up recurring billing.

SwipeSimple is a mobile Point of Sale solution. However, small businesses can use it as a POS option. Unlike other mobile POS apps, SwipeSimple can work on iOS and Android devices and desktop systems.

Here are some of the features that Payment Depot Mobile can offer:

  • SMS Receipts – Merchants can send receipts to customers via SMS and email. This includes cash transactions. This is excellent news for businesses aiming for a paperless environment.
  • Catalog – This mobile app allows merchants to create a record of products or services. This acts as a quick reference for new employees.
  • Inventory – Together with Payment Depot Mobile’s catalog, merchants can use the app’s Inventory tool to keep track of supplies. Merchants can even use this feature to categorize items and assign SKUs. Although there are more advanced inventory systems, this mobile feature is quite useful.
  • Offline Mode – This feature allows merchants to process transactions even without an internet or Wi-Fi connection. This is a useful feature for those who plan to use their mobile app in areas where there is no internet connectivity, like during offsite events.

Payment Depot’s Offline Mode allows merchants to limit the number of offline transactions as a precautionary measure. Merchants have up to 30 days to process offline transactions.

Payment Depot offers 24/7 customer support to merchant subscribers either via phone or through email. They can also receive technical support through social media platforms like Facebook or Google+.

Payment Depot offers a money-back guarantee to new subscribers. If a merchant is unhappy with the payment processing, they can cancel their subscription within 90 days. Payment Depot will issue a full refund. The refund does not cover interchange fees, though, since those fees go to the banks and not Payment Depot.

There are downsides to Payment Depot’s Offline Mode, though. Since this is not a full POS terminal, merchants cannot swipe a customer’s credit card. Merchants can either swipe or key-in the card. There is also the possibility of failed transactions once the merchant goes online.

Payment Depot Mobile Versus Competitors

Other payment processing companies offer services similar to those offered by Payment Depot. Here is a quick look at their similarities and differences.

Stripe

Stripe is a credit card processor that only works online. Stripe does not charge monthly fees. This makes Stripe suitable for new businesses. Stripe charges 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction. Stripe is ideal for businesses that process a low volume of monthly transactions. For businesses that process more than $2,500 worth of transactions in a month, Payment Depot Mobile is a better choice.

Dwolla

Dwolla is an excellent option for those who want a payment solution purely for payment processing. Just like Payment Depot Mobile, Dwolla is capable of handling online payment processing. Merchants can also use Dwolla to set up recurring payments.

Unlike Payment Depot Mobile, though, Dwolla is not capable of processing mobile payments. Merchants cannot use Dwolla to process in-person payments as well. Another advantage of Payment Depot Mobile is its capability to generate reports.

Podium

Podium is a great option for businesses that operate in multiple locations. Just like Payment Depot Mobile, Podium allows merchants to process credit and debit card payments. Merchants can also use Podium to process online and mobile payments.

Podium allows users to set-up recurring billing, and also has the capability to generate reports.

Unlike Payment Depot Mobile, merchants cannot use Podium to accept in-person payments. It is also not possible to integrate Podium into a POS system.
